Talent is the seed.
Dear Creative, talent is the seed. It is not the harvest.
Over the years I have watched extraordinary talent come to nothing, and I have watched modest talent build lasting careers. The difference was never the seed. It was the ground the seed landed on.
Three things (in my opinion) make up that ground:
The team... Who advises you? Who protects you? Who tells you the truth when it is inconvenient?
The terms... What you sign, how you split, whether your deals feed you or drain you.
The patience... Whether you allow things to grow at their pace or force an early harvest and damage the field.
Most creatives invest everything in the seed and almost nothing in the ground. Yet, the ground decides whether the gift you have becomes a career or a memory.
Guard your gift by building around it. The seed is already in your hands. Your work now is to prepare the field.
